1. Maintain accountability.

If you don’t maintain accountability, it’s easy to get back into trouble. It’s not a great idea to hang out with the same people who helped you get into the mess in the first place. If anything, this might be the right time to find new friends and develop a new support system. Your support system will be the people who are there when you need accountability. When you have people around you, it’s harder to fall into temptation. It might be intimidating to find new circles of friends and develop a support system, but you can do it. There are plenty of circles you can become acquainted with. Join a local church and get involved in different ministries that help other people. The church can be a great place to meet new people and develop a positive support system. Join a sports league that meets for practices on a daily basis. Another option involves a club surrounding a productive hobby like baking, crafts or wood-working.

2. Exercise.

It’s important to make sure that you make it a habit of exercising on a daily basis. In a lot of cases, people do drugs to self-soothe. They might be dealing with some type of stressor in their life and they need a release from the pressure. Exercise is a great alternative because it’s good for your body, mind and spirit. Many successful people start their day by working up a sweat on the treadmill, elliptical machine or the weight machines. Find a great way to enjoy a sweat session and release the tension that you might feel as a result of your temptation.

3. Develop a schedule.

If there’s anything you want to avoid like the plague, it’s idle time. Idle time leads to disastrous results. When you don’t maintain a schedule, it’s easier to get into trouble and get involved in things you know you don’t need to be doing. Make a list of your goals and responsibilities. As you compile that list, you’ll be able to understand where your time needs to go. Be intentional about keeping a schedule and checking things off of that list. Once you develop a schedule, it’s also wise to make sure you make time for breaks. You can’t just focus on work all the time. However, when you take a break, make sure that it’s something positive. If you’re taking a break, go for a swim. Go for a walk. Go get a massage. Go read a book. It’s better to be occupied and relaxed because you don’t want to lead a hectic lifestyle. At the same time, you do want to make sure that your lifestyle is balanced and occupied.

4. Replace the temptation.

When many people make it out of rehab, they swear off the substance that they were addicted to and resolve to do better. While this is a noble endeavor, you also need to understand that there is a void. If you’re not careful, you’ll try to fill that void with the drug of choice. You don’t want to fall back into temptation and that’s understood. However. you need to replace the temptation with something positive. If you tend to smoke once you get off of work, find something else to do. Your new habit might involve Pilates. Perhaps you need to go to a Pilates class once you get off of work. If you like to read, consider that your new indulgence of choice. When you replace the temptation with a healthy habit, you’re more likely to fill the void and not feel the need to run to the addictive substance anymore. Instead of focusing on eliminating one habit, focus on replacing one habit with another.
